Consumers from emerging markets are vastly different than those in modern markets. Their needs, their income limitations and the frequent political unrest in their countries all differ greatly. They have transportation limitations that we don’t see. They have environmental constraints that we don’t have. All of these things are much different than the issues we face in modern markets.

In the past two years, economies in emerging market countries have shown significant weakness. Political unrest and economic difficulties are widespread and are having an impact on incomes. Plus the weakened US and European economies are having an effect on emerging markets.

According to the consulting firm McKinsey & Company, 128 million African households will earn  $5,000 US a year by 2020. This might not sound like much to us, but to them, this is a nice increase in emerging market income.
