The POS data dilemma is notorious. Every manufacturer knows that data arrives at different times from different retailers and third party sources in different formats. Data comes at sporadic times of the month, in a multitude of different formats with varying information. On top of that, retailers restate data, products change categories, duplicate data comes in, etc. All of these things are difficult and cumbersome to manage.

We believe that far too many companies are calling themselves a “Demand Signal Repositories or Demand Signal Management” solutions, when in fact they are not. Some are reporting tools, some are database vendors, some are Wal-Mart reporting tools, but very few are actually a manageable process that delivers signals to the business users on a long term, manageable basis.

Reason #7. What Makes POS Data so Difficult to work with for CPG Data Scientists?

  Point of sale data comes in many different formats. Those formats all need to be transformed into a common data type in order to report off that data. An enterprise architecture needs to be able to extract data, transform the various formats into the same data type and load the data into a format that is easily accessible.

Depending on the database you select for analysis, The various formats listed above need to conform to one single data format. In that process, data needs to be mapped, hierarchies need to be aligned, calendars need to be addressed.
